Darkest Hour is a period drama film which stars Gary Oldman, Kristen Scott Thomas and Lily James. This film is directed by Joe Wright.
Joe Wright returns to his dramatic form with this focused, flag waving biopic that brings the obstacles and triumphs of Winston Churchill to life on the big screen thanks to the magnificent albeit hammy performance from Gary Oldman. Aside from Oldman's show stopping performance, the film shines visually thanks to Bruno Delbonnel's stunning cinematography.
While this film has received a lot of awards attention and critical acclaim there is nothing about this film that felt groundbreaking or evolutionary in terms of film, which is not necessarily a problem as far as the enjoyment of watching, but for a film that is so hyped and praised one would hope for something a little less pedestrian. It's not that I would say the film is 'bad', in fact it ticks all the right boxes for a good biopic, it's just that nothing really exceeds expectations here and while it deviled on what it needed to the end result can feel a little flat.
