Bad Times at the El Royale (Review)

'Bad Times at the El Royale' is a neo-noir thriller. Starring Jeff Bridges, Cynthia Erivo, Dakota Johnson and Chris Hemsworth. This film is directed by Drew Goddard.

With a cast of character actors, Drew Goddard's latest film is a cinema lovers dream featuring gorgeous nostalgic visuals, colourful performances and sharp dialog.

While comparsions of Tarantino have been thrown around (some of which are valid) I believe that Goddard's vision still stands on it's own, there were a few moments to me which echoed back to his prior film 'Cabin in the Woods'. The cinematography and production design are both striking of an era that was once loved, but now faded, simular to the surroundings and even to an extent the charractors themselves.

This film manages to keep one step ahead of the audience and uses it's storytelling effectively to keep the tension building as we understand more about the characters.

The assemble cast do a great job here, while the material is good it's the casting which really makes it all work so well. Highlights include Jeff Bridges, Cynthia Erivo and Chris Hemsworth.

With a fast pace and constantly raised stakes, Bad Times at the El Royale is one of the most throughly enjoyable films I have seen this year, the only minor thing to comment on is that the character of Emily could of potentialy had a little more charractor devopment. If your looking for a thrilling ride, then the El Royale is the place to stay.
