Mandy (Review)

'Mandy' is a arthouse horror-thriller film which stars Nicolas Cage and Andrea Riseborough. This film is co-written and directed by Panos Cosmatos.

Coming out of seemingly nowhere this latest film starring Nicolas Cage is sure to start making noise as one the most unapologetic craziest films of the year. In truth, I had a hard time defining the genre of this film, I am still not fully sure of what I saw.

This film for all intent and purposes is an atmospheric experience, from Benjamin Loeb's colour popping nightmarish cinematography to Jóhann Jóhannsson's intensive score.

At it's core the story is a revenge plot, nothing new, but the art-house execution and bizarre world-building make the premise all that more exciting.

As far as the characters are concerned, while Cage's character Red Miller and the antagonist Jeremiah Sand have interesting ideas and behaviors there seems to be a lack of development across the board for an audience to be truly invested into the characters struggles.

Without spoiling anything, the film deals with the themes of religious cults and how we individually seek for something further than earth, most of themes are executed well, but I believe they could of been pushed further.

Overall, Mandy is a film which is not only visually striking, but it is also a cinematic experience and while it may lack character development and could of explored it's themes in further detail, it is still a film which you won't forget easily.
