A Star is Born (Review)

'A Star is Born' is a romantic musical drama film which stars Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. This film is co-written and directed by Bradley Cooper.

Remaking a classic film can sometimes be a hard sell.  Making a modern adaptation of a film which critics and some audiences are already familiar with isn't easy to get right as you have to be somewhat faithful to the original source material, while bringing something new to the table.

Looking at the trailers and advertising for this film, knowing that the star of the film is also the director, I was a little worried that the end result could be a vanity project about how "being famous is so tortuous" for the actors involved.

While you do get that, fortunately, there is more beneath the surface here. Bradley Cooper does a phenomenal job of multi tasking this film. His directorial skills are sharp and creative, but more importantly service the story well, he also gets great performances out of his cast, with Lady Gaga giving a performance that could easily make her a front runner for the Oscar nominations. Both Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga feel natural and believable together on-screen. Hiring singers such as Lady Gaga is a refreshing choice from Hollywood hiring actors singing roles who can't sing, both Cooper and Gaga do fantastic vocal performances, also to note is Cooper's fantastic guitar skills, while I'm not sure how much was him and how much was staging, the end result it certainly effective.

Similar to Crazy Rich Asians there is nothing too unique about this film in comparison with other films in it's genre, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing as it's charmingly told with enough skill that you forgot you have seen this story before and just finding your self going along on the journey with the characters.

Similar to it's predecessor, A Star is Born is a timeless story, which we are eager to hear again and again, with great performances, skillful writing and passionate direction it's hard not to pass up on this good natured retelling.
