Deadpool 2 (Review)

'Deadpool 2' is an action comedy superhero film which stars Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin and Zazie Beetz. This film is directed by David Leitch.

After a short interval Deadpool is back. The 2016 film drew in the crowds thanks to it's self referential and adult humour and was a welcome change into an already crowded superhero genre.

This time the film is bigger and more action packed than the first, however truth be told it's not as fresh as the original. The film starts with somewhat of a rocky start because of the rather thin and forced story line, however once the film kicks in, so does the humour. The humour in this film is touch and go throughout, some jokes land while others don't. The problem is that the self referential jokes are too common and while that is a paramount part of the original's success, here it feels quite obnoxious and overbearing.

Where the humour really works in this film is the visual jokes and story twists which occur, these moments caught me off guard and had me burst out laughing, so while I find the jokes to work less frequently here, the ones which work are arguably funnier than the first film.

Being David Leitch is an action director, the fight and car chase scenes are well choreographed especially one scene involving the character Domino's super-power. While Julian Dennison is entertaining and amusing to watch, his character is practically the same from 'Hunt for the Wilderpeople'. Ryan Reynolds is clearly having the time of his life playing this character and his enthusiasm and charisma really lifts the material .

Overall while this film is not as impactful or as funny as the first, the parts that work do stand tall. Unlike the first film it's not as re-watchable, but it's a fun film which is worth watching if you enjoyed the original, you'll just need to lower your expectations a tad.
